Mamadou Diabate's new kora recording showcases his ensemble work with trio. Heritage features Mamadou touring band, Guinean guitarist Djikoryam Mory Kante, balafonist Bala Kouyaté, Baye Kouyaté on calabash and talking drum, and on bass, American jazz musician Noah Jarrett.

Tunga (Alula, 2000)

Tunga means "adventure." This stunning debut album from world traveler and master kora player Mamadou Diabate infuses traditional Malian music with an array of innovative elements such as American blues, Bambara music, and the fast, Mandinka style of kora playing. Mamadou's debut release displays his versatility and personal style on a solo track and a duet with Ira Coleman. Elsewhere, he invites some of his favorite New York-based musicians to join him, including Fuseini Kouyate on the spike lute called ngoni, Famoro Diabate on balafon, and jazzman Ira Coleman on bass. Mamadou's goal was to highlight the instruments of Manding but, on two tracks, the group is joined by Abdoulaye Diabate, perhaps the finest jeli singer currently living in the United States.
